New News #12: Happy Holidays

You can read this news in a separate browser tab?

Happy Holidays to our more than 2000 users

THANK YOU!: With now more than 2000 users trying out our new service, we are getting lots of valuable feedback and are doing our best to the make requested improvements. We appreciate your participation and patience throughout the past year as we started up goEverywhere.

New accounts : Due to the unusually high demand we are queuing new account creation. We expect to release new accounts in mid January, but don’t worry, if you have recommended us to your friends we are keeping their requests stored until then.

Tell a friend: Go to “Invite a Freind” to get credit for recommending goEverywhere. For your convenience their is also a “Tell a Friend” icon on your workspace.

What up with the name: Along with our new look we have a new spelling for our name goEverywhere and a new domain, goEverywhere.com. These changes should make it easier to remember our address. If you find an old spelling please contact us .

newopenplaces

Don’t forget to check the “newopenplaces” tag for cool new things we’ve found for you to use on your workspace.

Blog publishing: Although a minimalist site, “Tabloid” does a decent job of creating PDF newsletters of a blog. There are some subtle HP “tracks” on the site, wonder what that’s about, printing I suspect?

Online Slide Shows: ZOHO show is a good presentation creator for creating basic stuff but Sliderocket excels in applying online technology to presentation creation.

goEverywhereHelp tag: We acquired a lot of new users this last month and there were multiple queries about where to get more information. We created a tag called goEverywherehelp that pulls together multiple sources of help. Just open My Open Place, click on Shared and then click on the goeverywherehelp tag.

Instant Messaging: We put meebo on your workspace as an IM aggregation tool. If you want a simple yet online  YIM tool, add an Icon to the desktop with this address http://webmessenger.yahoo.com/.

Hint: A quick way to get a URL is to open the location in My Open Place and copy the address out of the address bar at the bottom of the page. You can then paste it into the address field when creating an icon.

Whats new-changed

Since the last New News we have made a lot of improvements. In fact we are making many improvements each week. Going forward we will put links to the details of these improvements here rather than all the details, just click below.

“Whats new-changed”

We are hard at work fixing these blemishes:

The myOpenPlace “back button” still is a bit temperamental in some corner cases.

If you have a problem with TagNav windows not displaying all your tags, open your myOpenPlace first then reopen TagNav.

In IE the “give feedback” icon isn’t working correctly. Please use the “Feedback Forum” if you have this problem. You will need an account at Get Satisfaction as they are an independent satisfaction tracking service.

If you custom icons disappeared from your workspace, edit them and add the icon back. If this didn’t fix your custom icons please contact us.

If you know of more improvements let us know by clicking the Give Feedback icon on your workspace.

iPOD drawing for DreamForce attendees

After the drawing this it where the winning user and the retrieveal code will be posted, so check back often.

Workspace Hot Keys

Shift+N Open a new myOpenPlaces window
Shift+s Send focus to the search tool (right lower side of workspace)
* You must be focused on the goEverywhere workspace for this to work!

Adding to myOpenPlaces

There are several ways to add items to your myOpenPlaces:

From the myOpenPlaces window

1. From myOpenPlaces, right click on a place in the list and select “Copy Link Location

2. Then click the go button on the toolbar.

3. With a right click paste the link into the forms address field and fill in the rest of the information.

The use of the contextual (right click) “Copy Link Location“, can be used any time you are on a website as an easy way to copy an address.

From your browsers toolbar

1. With your myOpenPlaces window open, click Add More Places

2. Then drag the Post to My Open Places place marker tool to your browser tool bar.

3. From then on whenever you are outside the workspace click on “Post to My Open Places” fill in the form and use the “Copy Link Location” to fill in the address. The next time you go to your myOpenPlaces the place will be there.

From the “Shared” list of places

1. With your myOpenPlaces window open, click Shared

2. Each location in the list that is not already in your open places, can be copied to your open places by clicking “copy“.

Adding Icons to your workspace

You can add a shortcut to your workspace or quick launch bar. Here is how you do it:

Right Click on the webtop and select “Preferences”Select “Add Shortcut Icon” or “Add Quick Launch

Note: Adding Icons to the webtop and the Quick Launch work the same, only the location of the Icon is different.

From the Add Shortcut Icon or “Add Quick Launch” dialog fill in the title & link address. Then select an Icon Image from the list (this will be the icon that is put on your webtop).

I chose to make a link to my woodturning blog and assigned it a “star” icon.

Note: If you click the “Open the link outside of Webtop” box when you click the icon a new tab will open outside your desktop. This function is useful if you add a shortcut link that you know will try and hijack the webtop. You can also cause any icon to open in a tab off the workspace by right-clicking the icon.

Next click “Finish” to add the shortcut to your workspace.

Notice that now I have a shortcut to my Woodturning blog represented as a “Star” on my workspace.Clicking this shortcut will open a window on my workspace containing my woodturning blog.

If you right-click on a shortcut icon you can open the shortcut on the workspace or force it to open in a new tab.

We are Symantec!

This was a special week because we finally disclosed our true self.

We are Symantec!

The goEverywhere team is actually a team of folks at Symantec operating in its business incubator.

Symantec’s incubator is a special place where we can practice one of our core values, “Innovation”.

It may seem strange for Symantec to be exploring the “Personal Cloud Computing” space, but on second thought ….. its in our DNA to manage and protect your personal computer. Today Symantec provides leading software solutions in all areas of desktop and data management. Therefore, we think it is only fitting that we offer similar services in the “Cloud”.

goEverywhere addresses a specific area of “Cloud Computing”, the desktop. Have you ever wondered what the “Cloud” can offer to PC/desktop users? We hope that goEverywhere answers that question.

Over the past six months we have been developing this service under the guidance of a small set of customers. Very soon we will open this service to everyone and you can help guide us to the next level of functionality and service. If you are one of the curious folks that found your way to this blog you are welcome to get an account and try it out now.

goEverywhere is the ONE place you can go to use the best the web has to offer. We dynamically present the best applications and places on the web to you in a workspace that is as familiar as your PC is today. Additionally, we have taken care to make access to important applications and places as secure as possible.

There is a lot of other exciting reasons for every PC user to consider using goEverywhere, way more than I should put in this post. So I encourage you to review the entire site and don’t miss the videos.

We have just scratched the surface of what goEverywhere can offer you in the “Cloud”. I encourage you to get an account and try this service out.

goEverywhere isn’t perfect…we are working on that! So If you have any problems or imagine anything you would like to see added, just contact us using the “give feedback” icon on your workspace.

The Symantec goEverywhere team!
